NT Wright & Cookie Monster Square Off on Colbert

So here’s the NT Wright clip from the Colbert report!

…I’d recommend watching the whole episode here – it’s best to take Wright in context, as he shares this episode with none other than Cookie Monster. Colbert is funny as always, though you can tell he appreciates Wright, he’s a bit ‘softball’ – the good Bishop Tom, for his part, is affable and even occasionally funny, but its easy to see the inherent limitations of satirical TV as a medium for discussing ‘serious’ theology. Nonetheless an intriguing entree into a vital area of Christian spirituality – what is the nature of resurrection? Of New Heavens and Earth? Parousia and eschatology? While I differ with Wright in some key areas, I credit him more than anyone else living for bringing this conversation to the forefront of popular consciousness today. One could hardly hope for a better conversation partner. You go, Tom!

I don’t know. The Hindu (I think she was Hindu???) woman that was on the night before was funny and did a great job. She was an older woman who reminded me of my grandmother and she kept up with Colbert the whole time. Wright never seemed to be in sync with Colbert and came off as awkward and unfunny. I applaud him for trying though.

    Hi Mike

Here’s the link you were looking for on Peter Rollins blog. Try this link for the Garden. I think its in Brighton not Bristol so probably why a google didn’t find it straight off.

Here’s the link to the wikihttp://thegardenbrighton.wikispaces.com/

What do you think Wright is getting at with all the talk about re-creating? My interest is definitely peaked.

    Mike,

I truly don’t understand the embed problem. I watched the video at the CC site and grabbed the embed URL with no hitches. Could be this new, powerful, outstanding FireFox 3.0.

Shoot, I should have taken your advice to watch it in context. “One cannot live on cookies alone”!

Great note about the context! That hadn’t even crossed my mind. About Wright coming off as awkward and unfunny, that is intriguing. What led him to be on the show in the first place? What were Wright’s reasons in being there? Colbert’s?
